Biodentine: what it is and when it is used

Biodentine can replace damaged dentine and support selected treatments of the dental pulp. Its use depends on the diagnosis and whether the tooth can be restored.

What is Biodentine?

Biodentine is a calcium silicate-based dental material used as a substitute for dentine, the tissue beneath enamel. A dentist may use it in selected deep cavities, pulp treatment or certain repairs involving the root. Septodont describes the material and its indications.

It is not a universal replacement for every filling, and it does not make a whole tooth grow back. The material is one part of a treatment plan. The diagnosis, amount of remaining tooth structure and quality of the final restoration all matter.

When might a dentist recommend it?

Possible applications include replacing damaged dentine, protecting an exposed pulp in a suitable case, or a pulpotomy. A pulpotomy removes part of the pulp with the aim of keeping the remaining living tissue healthy. These treatments require careful selection; a material name alone cannot establish whether a painful tooth is suitable.

Your dentist will consider symptoms, the examination, relevant images and whether the tooth can be sealed and restored. Tell them about previous pain, including pain that has stopped, and any treatment the tooth has already received.

Can it avoid root canal treatment?

In selected cases, vital pulp treatment may preserve living tissue. However, placing Biodentine is not a substitute for root canal treatment whenever that treatment is indicated. Some teeth need a different approach, and a tooth treated conservatively may still need further treatment later.

The distinction is between diagnoses and treatment options, not simply two products. Ask why your dentist recommends the proposed approach, what its limitations are and how the result will be monitored. The AAE publishes guidance on vital pulp therapy.

How does it compare with MTA?

Biodentine and MTA are materials used in some similar clinical situations. Their handling, properties and specific indications differ. There is no single material that is best for every tooth. Selecting the case correctly and carrying out the procedure appropriately are more important than choosing a brand in advance.

Is another filling or crown needed afterwards?

Replacing dentine may be followed by a final composite filling or a laboratory-made restoration. Ask whether the treatment carried out today completes the plan or protects the tooth until another appointment. A tooth that feels comfortable may still need its final restoration.

Before leaving, confirm the next appointment, instructions for eating and cleaning, and what to do if you cannot attend. Delaying the next stage without an agreed plan can leave the treatment incomplete.

What should you report after treatment?

Let the clinic know about persistent or increasing pain, a change in the way the tooth meets its opposite number, or a strong reaction to temperature. No material can guarantee a particular lifespan or an absence of discomfort. Planned reviews can be important even if you have no symptoms.

At ProDent, we assess the tooth before discussing restorative treatment or root canal treatment. The price list includes Biodentine treatment, but the full estimate should also explain any other stages of the restoration.
