A consultation gives you time to discuss your expectations and medical history and to find out whether a treatment is suitable. The clinician explains possible outcomes, limitations, risks and alternatives. You do not have to go ahead with a procedure simply because you have attended a consultation.
Preparing for your appointment
Bring information about your medicines, allergies, ongoing conditions and previous treatments. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, breastfeeding, infection or skin changes in the proposed treatment area. Do not stop prescribed medicines yourself; discuss any changes with the clinician responsible for your care.
Suitability, risks and recovery
Contraindications and recovery time depend on the procedure and your circumstances. Swelling, redness, tenderness or bruising may occur; less common but serious complications are also possible. Before deciding, discuss the specific risks and the symptoms that would require urgent contact.
