Is it too late to straighten your teeth?
Orthodontic treatment can be considered after growth has finished. Age alone does not decide which appliance is appropriate. The teeth and supporting tissues need assessment, and active decay or gum disease should be controlled before treatment begins.
Adults may need coordinated care involving orthodontics, periodontal treatment or restoration of missing teeth. For example, moving teeth can form part of a plan to create space for a replacement tooth. Existing crowns, implants and gaps must be included in that planning.
How do braces and aligners compare?
Both can move teeth, but they are not interchangeable for every type of movement or bite problem. Diagnosis should lead the decision.
| Question | Fixed braces | Clear aligners |
|---|---|---|
| Can you remove them? | Brackets stay attached to the teeth. | Aligners are removed as instructed, including for meals and cleaning. |
| What matters each day? | Cleaning around brackets and care when eating. | Wearing them for the prescribed time and following the change schedule. |
| How visible are they? | Appearance depends on bracket type. | They are discreet, but attachments on teeth may be visible. |
| Are they suitable for every case? | An orthodontist assesses their limits. | Some plans cannot be completed with aligners alone. |
If you are considering ONCE aligners, ask about suitability rather than choosing by the system name alone. Treatment still needs supervision and reviews.
What happens before treatment starts?
The consultation assesses tooth positions, bite, hygiene and the surrounding tissues. The clinician selects photographs, scans or X-rays where needed, taking account of existing records. Do not order images yourself as a precaution.
Ask what change is realistic, whether other procedures are needed and what the estimate covers. The timeline depends on the diagnosis, planned movements, chosen method and cooperation during treatment. It cannot be established reliably from a smile photograph alone.
Will straightening teeth cure jaw pain or headaches?
Pain in the jaw muscles, joints or head needs its own assessment. It is not automatically an indication for braces, and straightening teeth cannot be promised to resolve it. NIDCR information on temporomandibular disorders explains the limitations of treatments that permanently change the bite.
Likewise, straighter teeth do not remove the need for cleaning or guarantee freedom from decay. Mention clenching or grinding during the consultation so its implications can be considered separately.
Daily care and appointments
With braces, clean carefully around brackets and between teeth. With aligners, clean both your teeth and the appliance as instructed. Your hygienist can help select suitable brushes and demonstrate their use.
Orthodontic adjustments, routine examinations and hygiene visits have different purposes. Continue the agreed schedule for each. Contact the clinic if an appliance breaks, an aligner stops fitting or significant pain develops; do not simply wait for the next planned review. The NHS braces guide discusses treatment and oral hygiene risks.
What happens after the braces come off?
Teeth can change position after active treatment, so retention is part of the plan. This may use a removable retainer, a bonded wire or both. The orthodontist specifies wear, cleaning and reviews.
Ask about retainers and their costs before starting, including what to do if one breaks. To discuss orthodontics at ProDent, arrange a consultation in Nysa. The price list provides individual items; your plan should clarify the full scope, reviews and retention.
